It was with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of Andy Oughton in the summer of 2026. A British canoe instructor, Andy had been a loyal friend and companion of the Open Canoe Festival for many years.

Andy was one of those special people who truly embodied the spirit of our festival: a passion for traditional canoeing, a love of teaching, the sharing of skills and knowledge, and above all, the friendships that grow stronger with each passing edition.

A passionate instructor renowned for his mastery of traditional canoeing techniques, Andy shared his knowledge with generations of OCF participants. Through his workshops, particularly those dedicated to poling (propelling a canoe using a long pole), he helped preserve and pass on the rich heritage of traditional canoeing.

But beyond his technical expertise, we will remember Andy above all as a truly endearing person. Behind his quiet nature and distinctive personality lay great kindness, a subtle sense of humour, deep empathy, and a genuine affection for our community.

Andy often said that coming back to teach at the Open Canoe Festival felt like “coming home”, a chance to reunite with his European friends and once again share the passion that brings us together every spring on the banks of the Drôme River.

This year, we have lost far more than an instructor. We have lost a dear friend, a member of our canoeing family, who leaves behind precious memories and a lasting legacy in the history of the Open Canoe Festival.

The waters of the Drôme will continue to carry his memory, and perhaps carry him too, wherever his journey now takes him.

A special tribute to Andy will be held during the Open Canoe Festival 2027.

Thank you for everything, Andy. You will be deeply missed. ❤️

Paul, Julien and the entire Open Canoe Festival family.
