Nature news – Did you know?
The Drôme is one of the last wild rivers in Europe, with a natural, torrential flow. It meanders for 106 km from its source to its confluence with the Rhône.
As a result, it is home to some exceptional flora and fauna, and in particular to two experts in camouflage:
On the banks Theringed plover: this small bird lays 4 eggs on the ground among the pebbles. Their camouflage colour means they can be mistaken for the river’s pebbles. Be careful where you step!
In the water The zingel asper: this small fish endemic to the Rhône basin is in danger of extinction. It only survives in rivers with a natural profile and was reintroduced to the Drôme a few years ago. Here’s a hint on how to spot it: lying on the bottom of the water, its eyes glow in the night like a cat’s! Take advantage of your stay to admire the biodiversity that surrounds you and treat it with respect.
La Drôme est l’une des dernières rivières sauvages d’Europe, avec un fonctionnement naturel et un régime torrentiel. Elle serpente sur 106 km de sa source à sa confluence avec le Rhône.
Grâce à ce fonctionnement, elle abrite une faune et une flore d’exception et en particulier deux as du camouflage :
Sur les berges Le Petit Gravelot : ce petit oiseau pond 4 œufs au sol parmi les cailloux. Leur couleur camouflage permet de les confondre avec les galets de la rivière. Prenez garde où vous posez les pieds !
Dans l’eau L’Apron du Rhône : ce petit poisson endémique du bassin du Rhône est en voie de disparition. Il ne survit que dans les rivières au profil naturel et a été réintroduit dans la Drôme il y a quelques années. Petit indice pour l’observer : plaqué au fond de l’eau, ses yeux brillent dans la nuit tels ceux d’un chat ! There are some events that come up every year and that you pass by saying to yourself: “not concerned” or “déjà vu”. I’m interested in the river, in paddling sports in general, in outdoor sports, I do a bit of kayaking, packrafting, inflatable canoeing… Why would I participate in an event that seems to be all about canoeing? Because the Open Canoe Festival is not just about canoeing. But you really have to go there to understand it!
The OCF is the largest gathering dedicated to the culture of canoeing. 3 days of workshops (100 in total!) led in 3 languages by the best European specialists. You will of course learn about technique (for beginners, intermediates or advanced paddlers), river safety, but also and above all a multitude of themes that make the event so rich and unique.
No trace camping, river fauna and flora, edible plants, leadership, electronic equipment, art of bivouacking, fires and knots, expedition preparation, regulations… These are some of the workshops that will occupy your days. In the evening: a concert, a film, a prize lotery (with a canoe to be won) provide an unforgettable atmosphere. And what about the bewitching blue waters of the Drôme during the big descent on Sunday! Frankly, you should try!

Il y a des actus qui reviennent chaque année et sur lesquelles on passe en se disant : « pas concerné » ou « déjà vu ». Je m’intéresse à la rivière, à l’itinérance en général, aux sports de pleine nature, je fais un peu de kayak, du packraft, du gonflable… pourquoi participerais-je à un événement qui semble ne parler que de canoë ? Parce que justement l’Open Canoe Festival ne parle pas que de ça. Mais il faut vraiment y aller pour le comprendre !
L’OCF, c’est le plus grand rassemblement dédié à la culture du canoë de randonnée. 3 jours d’ateliers (100 au total !) encadrés en 3 langues par les meilleurs spécialistes européens. Vous y apprendrez bien sûr de la technique (pour débutant, intermédiaire ou confirmé), de la sécurité en rivière, mais aussi et surtout une multitude de thématiques qui font toute la richesse et le côté unique de l’événement.
Bivouac sans trace, faune et flore de la rivière, plantes comestibles, gestion de groupe, matos électronique, art du bivouac, feux et nœuds, préparation d’expédition, règlementation… Tels sont quelques-uns des ateliers qui vont occuper vos jours. Le soir : concert, film, tirage au sort (avec un canoë à gagner, un voyage en Laponie, une combinaison étanche…) donnent une ambiance inoubliable. Et que dire des eaux bleues et envoûtantes de la Drôme lors de la grande descente ! Franchement, vous devriez essayer !

The Far North, just a stone’s throw from France! For 7 days, we’ll be paddling in complete autonomy on the Abyalven, one of Lapland’s most beautiful rivers. Winding its way through the boreal forest, also known as taiga, the Abyalven awaits us with its grandiose landscapes, arctic fauna, calms and rapids. Perhaps the river will offer us one of its salmon to make the evening’s bivouac even more memorable. Whatever the case, we’ll be in good spirits!
Environment and spirit of navigation
Lapland is Europe’s far north. Lapland is home to the ancient Sami people and their transhumant reindeer herding. Lapland is the taiga and its pine trees as far as the eye can see. Lapland is the midnight sun and the northern lights. Lapland is a land of pristine rivers. Lapland is another world, just a stone’s throw from our own.
If the mere mention of the region’s name sends a thrill down your spine, don’t hesitate: we suggest you discover it by canoe. We’ll be canoeing down the upstream section of the Abyalven, a dam-free river that flows all the way to its mouth at the Baltic Sea.
You’ll return home feeling relaxed, with a change of scenery and a wealth of new skills. Let yourself be tempted. You won’t regret it.
You’ll be guided by Aurélien Rateau, a qualified river guide (BPJEPS CKDA), open canoeist, experienced naturalist and experienced expedition organizer.
Destinations Rivières will also be offering one of its two-day technical river courses.
